Prepare Your Herbs For Winter

The time is coming….Summer is going to start to cool off for most of the United States over the next 30 days and that means it’s time to prepare your herbs for the colder months.

I don’t know about you but I love having fresh herbs when cooking for my family, especially since we are a Lacto-ovo Vegetarian family who really enjoys eating what we grow.

I wanted to give you a little help on how to store your herbs for the Winter, so you don’t have to worry about keeping a plant alive in your home.

Step One: Pick your best herbs, if you have a small garden or even use a patio to grow your herbs, now is the time to trim them. Select the best leaves- after all you may want to make a killer pasta sauce in the middle of January. You just never know!

Step Two: Wash your herbs, I’d recommend the salad spinner if you don’t already have one! It’s amazing and saves so much time.

Step Three: Place your herbs in an ice cube tray and fill with water or olive oil, your choice. We use water because I never know what combo I’m going to use them for. Today I froze Parsley and Basil....we use that the most in the house!

Step Four: Place in the freezer overnight, I’d recommend at least 12 hours of freeze time but you can leave them in longer if you’d like.

Step Five: Once they are frozen pop them out and place in a freezer safe ziploc bag for storing.

You can leave these in the freezer all year long and then once you start cooking just pop one in your pot and you’re ready to go. No cutting, no mess, just a simple way to have fresh herbs all year long!

Yes! This is so simple, I'm going to give it a try. Thank you!

You're so welcome! I promise once you do it, you will love how easy this is! Especially in the colder months when it's harder to grow herbs without a indoor grow space.
