Serious Talk About Children in the Modeling and Talent Industry

9/1/2020

#SaveTheChildren isn’t just a hashtag anymore. The people have spoken up regarding children in more ways than one and it’s trending all over social media as I write this post. As most everyone knows by now, Epstein's Flight Log revealed more than any American or human being in general wanted to believe was actually happening. Especially, right here on US Soil.
Picture
For decades kids have made their way into the mainstream media, from tv shows to pageantry and even runway events. So what’s the difference now vs 20 years ago? Great question…..The difference is everyone knows what is really going on and it’s not sitting well with any of us.

I personally chauffeured my son around from Atlanta Pop-up events to New York Fashion Week, he was amazing on the runway, wearing clothes from top designers and even up and coming ones. He loved the runway life so much he started modeling more and more, until he eventually moved on from it.
The reason I decided to write this post is to try and help parents navigate the modeling and talent industry for children who really want to participate but also want to take every possible step to have a safe experience.
Picture
My first recommendation is when deciding to sign your child up for any modeling, talent or photo shoot opportunities always check the reviews! If your child is wanting to walk on a runway for a child's designer, you will find reviews from other parents on the event social media page or google. If you see no parent reviews...Stay CLEAR! Parents in this industry understand how important it is to review an event, they do this to help other parents out. If this is a new event, I would recommend sitting it out and waiting for the next one. Don’t rush into modeling just because something comes along, not all gigs are created equal.
Picture
Second, sign your child up with a reputable talent agency that specializes in working with kids & teens. DO NOT let your children participate in events without an agent agreeing to the said event. Why? Agencies know what projects are “children approved” , they know the management over the project, they know how to ensure your children are safely represented in the project and let’s face it...they have the experience that most parents don’t have.
Picture
Third, time for parent-judgement...If a designer puts your 9 year old daughter in booty shorts...WALK away! This is an obvious NO-NO in the industry. Modeling should always be tasteful if children are involved. When my son was modeling he typically wore denim jeans, button up shirts and suits. Girls are not different, Swimwear Runway shows for young girls are NEVER ok.
Picture
Fourth, photo shoots! This one is sometimes too frustrating...As a model you typically will look for TFP “Time for Print” Opportunities with local photographers to grow your portfolio. TFP shoots are an amazing way to try out new photography techniques or stage a cool fashion shoot you’ve been dying to do or just bulk up your online photography portfolio and avoid paying for every shoot….just NOT for kids! If you want to build your child's portfolio you need to stay clear of TFP Opportunities, pay for your prints with a photographer that is well known, has a huge web presence and has worked with other children in the industry. Make sure the photographer that you are using shows you their work with other children prior to the shoot.
Picture
Finally, parents that stay involved are the BEST! Never send your child to a shoot, set or gig of any kind without being behind the scenes. I’ve actually had to pull my son from gigs that stated parents had to drop the kids off and weren’t allowed backstage. NEVER ever leave your child alone on a set without you close by. Parents have to be involved, I can’t say that enough!

I hope this helps shed a little light on children in the modeling industry. I would never discourage someone from modeling, as long as they are being safe and completely understand the dangers that come with this industry, especially for children.

I’ve included a few links that will help you get started and remember not all models need an agent….but your child DOES!

TOP 5 Ways to Avoid a Modeling Scam

8/13/2020

Image: www.pxfuel.com

TOP 5 Ways to Avoid a Modeling Scam

1. AGENCIES- Modeling and talent agencies get work for experienced models and actors. Some agents require that you sign up exclusively with them, while others allow you to also register with other agencies in town. Either way, legitimate agencies don’t charge you an up-front fee to serve as your agent. They get paid when you get paid.

2. PHOTOGRAPHER CHOICE- To break into the business, you need professional photos. But you should be able to choose your own photographer. An agency that requires you to use their photographers likely is a scam.

3. GUARANTEE- No modeling or acting job is ever guaranteed. And depending on where you live, the market for those types of jobs may be very small.
4. UNSOLICITED CONTACT- Some scams may try to contact you directly via Facebook or Instagram with an offer of a casting or modeling job. If someone asks you to send suggestive photos of yourself, pay him or her any amount of money, or offers you a large amount of money, it is most likely a scam.

5. MEETINGS- NEVER arrange to meet alone with someone who you do not know about potential modeling work. If you are represented by an agency, be sure to field any work-related requests by your agent. A legitimate professional will not mind if you bring a parent, guardian, or trusted friend with you, especially upon first meeting.

I'm lucky enough to get to meet new faces in the modeling industry all the time...but this time, I'm struck. I had the opportunity to interview JiMin and I promise you will want to keep your eyes on her career. Her photos are incredible but I'll let you see for yourself!

Meet Model JiMin Kwon

Picture
Photographer: Thomas Lee MUAH: Fatima Zapata
What are your goals?

My goal (wish), as a model, would be to be on the cover of a beauty or fashion magazine, in addition to making a livable income from modeling.

What/who inspires you?

I am inspired by people's creativity, resilience, and grit!

Dream location?

My dream would be to reside in a place where I could balance my life as a professional philosopher and model -- I'm not sure where that sweet spot might be yet.
Picture
Photographer: Pamela Lopez
What did you want to be as a child?

I grew up in a traditional Korean household in Seoul where my mother took care of her bedridden mother-in-law for many years; I wanted to be a medical doctor to help cure my grandmother's illness.

How long have you been modeling?

I began modeling in February 2020. Since the industry was paused for about three months due to the Coronavirus pandemic, I've technically been modeling for two to three months so far!
Picture
Photographer: Shanon Gunter MUAH: Teresa Huerta
What is your focus/genre?

My focus is beauty and fashion editorials and commercials.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?

I've been fortunate enough to be a multi-published model within the first month of modeling.
Picture
Photographer: Yising Kao MUAH: Alyssa Romano
What about your style makes you so unique?

I believe that versatility is one of my greatest strengths -- most of the time I'm girly, but sometimes I like to surprise people with a look they didn't expect of me!

Looking for new talent?

Meet Model Monique LaBomme!

Picture
Photography by Michael La Bomme @thebomme_photography
Monique is signed with Wild Models Talent Agency & Brandy Brown Model Management.
What are your goals?

I strive to be an inspiration for all individuals, regardless of age, ethnicity, disability, etc, the world is yours to conquer. I strongly believe that every child should have the chance to see someone like them achieving all kinds of things. Everyone should grow up believing they can accomplish absolutely anything.

What/who inspires you?

I am inspired by models such as Winnie Harlow, Chelsea Werner, and Jillian Mercado. As a model fighting a chronic medical condition, I’ve watched these models redefine beauty standards and strive to join them.

Dream location?

I love nature based shoots whether it be a beach, the mountains, a desert etc. I love the amount of creativity that can come from nature alone.
Picture
Photography by Michael La Bomme @thebomme_photography
What did you want to be as a child?

As a child I wanted to be a model, an astronaut, a scientist, a fashion designer, a chef and so many others. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, I have a small company baking cupcakes and sweets for family/friend parties, and now I’m living my dream of modeling.

How long have you been modeling?

I started modeling as a teenager with my dad, a freelance photographer. I began modeling professionally about two years ago.

What is your focus/genre?

My main focus is print and commercial modeling. I especially love glamour/beauty shots. Anything that allows me to bring a character to life and “play pretend”.
Picture
MUAH Michael Vincent Makeup Academy Photographer Jimmy Romano @jimmy_canon
What about your style makes you so unique?

I think the confidence I show when flaunting my medical devices and medical alert service dog definitely add to my style. Everyone looks when your biggest accessory is a 60lb black Labrador. Aside from that I’m not crazy about labels. I could mix $600 shoes with a $5 dress. It’s all about how you feel when wearing your outfit and letting that confidence shine through.
Picture
Photography by Michael La Bomme @thebomme_photography
What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?

So far my greatest accomplishment has been a few photo shoots showcasing my type 1 diabetes. As stated before I want to help redefine beauty standards and inspire others to fight for their dreams regardless of life’s obstacles. Showing the diversity within the diabetic community and spreading awareness of a heavily stereotyped condition is one of my life missions.

Get to know our Cover Model from July, Jackson Rhodes!

July 2020 Cover Model Jackson Rhodes

Agent: Tribe Talent
Picture
Photographer: Anthony Romano @412ink MUA: Zack Lankford @zacklankford
What are your goals?

My life is multi-dimensional, so my goals are as well. Having multiple avenues to work on is refreshing, rewarding, and keeps life interesting.

Most importantly, finding the right home in NYC/LA is the next step. Being versatile in both markets is important, as you follow the opportunity in this industry, not the other way around. Reaching the higher end of the fashion industry and being a recognizable name is important to me.

Secondly, continuing to expand my social media platform. With over 30K in followers over several platforms, the key is to keep creating fantastic content on my fitness, nutrition, fashion, and personality. People love to see the real person!

Third, expanding my personal training offerings, so clients and interested individuals have more options, IP, and materials to choose from. Always stay hustling!

What/who inspires you?

I draw inspiration from many figures in different fields and areas of life. The key among everyone is success.

A short list includes Chipper Jones, Tom Brady, Christian Hogue, Tyler James, Sean O'Pry, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerburg, Warren Buffett, etc.

I pull successful traits from successful people and learn why and how they contribute to their success.
Picture
Photographer: Anthony Romano @412ink MUA: Zack Lankford @zacklankford
Dream location?

Malibu, the Cayman Islands, Turks & Caicos, etc.

You get the vibe! An island location with ease of access to the major markets.

I love a good mix between the stressful and stress-free life.

What did you want to be as a child?

I wanted to be a professional sports player, specifically baseball. An MLB player was my absolute dream.

Who wouldn't love to play in front of millions of people and play a game that you loved for a living?

I reached as far as college ball before my dream ended.
Nashville Film Institute
Producer - Liam Miles
Director - Micah Longoria
How long have you been modeling?

Since early 2020. I ramped up recently with signing with Tribe, a nationally-recognized mother agency with thousands of connections around the US and the globe.

I have unofficially modeled for years, including for my college, but decided that now is the right time to expand professionally.

What is your focus/genre?

Nowadays, you have to be versatile.

With that being said, high end fashion is my focus. With NYC/LA in my eyesight, fashion is the obvious draw!

However, commercial, fitness, and promotional shoots are fun, engaging, eventful. Having a good mix is imperative on your way to making a name for yourself.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?

Within the entertainment sphere, my "firsts" are always memorable. The first cover, the first extra, the first commercial, the first short film, etc. Those are definitely memories I will have for a long time.

The journey is the destination within all facets of life, so the greatest accomplishment within this career is always yet to come.

In greater life, holding steady with a life partner and winning four championships (and four rings!) with my college teammates are definitely highlight-able memories.
Picture
Photographer: Eric Henderson
Funniest Situation you’ve ever been in?

In college, my teammates and I were hosting a recruit for an unofficial visit. Apparently, he was trying really hard to impress us, as he kept saying he got drafted by the Dodgers in the 52nd round. Keep in mind, this was months before draft day and the 52nd round does not even exist! We laughed about it for a while and wondered why he'd lie about something so unimportant.

What about your style makes you so unique?

I live my life in my own way, and my style reflects that. In general, I am a huge believer that your own uniqueness is what differentiates one from another.

How does that relate to modeling?

I wear every style and brand in my daily life so am comfortable in any type of shoot. With comfort comes the knowledge of how to wear the fit and work the angles the optimal way. Whether it is fashion, commercial, fitness, active wear, promotional, etc., I have worn it myself around town!

Working with Jackson on our July Cover was inspiring. He has so much drive and determination as a model and we know he has big things coming his way. Jackson aspires to sign with an agency like Ford, Wilhelmina, LA Models or IMG. He plans on being at the Model and Talent Expo in Dallas this November.

Looking to book new talent?

Meet Model Lydia Livingood

Picture
Photographer & MUAH: Natalya White
What are your goals?

I am an artist so I love how creative I can be with modeling. My goal is to be my own boss, able to travel when I want and support myself with my art business and modeling.

What/who inspires you?

Tyra Banks, Yolanda Hadid and Ellen Degeneres, because they focus on their goals and never give up.

In their shows, they work on the whole person. They’re not focusing on the looks, it’s about putting in the work to be your best self and sharing it with the world, and you don’t have to cut others down in order to succeed. Living your passion is possible for anyone, if you believe in yourself.
Picture
Photographer: Natalya White MUAH: Lydia Livingood
Dream location?

Anywhere tropical and near the beach.

What did you want to be as a child?

I’ve always loved art, and I wanted to be an actress when I was 4. After high school I gave modeling a shot and fell in love with it.

How long have you been modeling?

I started modeling in 2009 in Kansas City. I have been traveling and moving around for the last few years and just moved to San Diego, where I’ve picked it up again.
Picture
Photographer: Natalya White MUAH: Lydia Livingood
What is your focus/genre?

I believe modeling is an art form, so my favorite thing to shoot is high fashion or editorial because you can be really creative. You can go crazy with the hair, makeup, and poses. Anything goes.

What about your style makes you so unique?

I can pull off a variety of looks, and have a background in theatre so I get into character for a shoot. I base my poses off the style of the setting, makeup, outfits, and photographer.

Are you looking for an Artist?

Meet Model, Artist and Future Filmmaker Kayla Grivois

Picture
Photographer: Albie Leon @albie.leon
What are your goals?

Currently, I've made it a goal of mine to get back to my filmmaking, but I want to integrate the style and movements that I've adapted from modeling. I basically want to make music videos and go big; well, as much as I can with what resources I have available.

Eventually, I would also like to do some traveling and modeling in other countries. I've always been a sort of vagabond with wanderlust and it would be an amazing experience to do what I love while seeing the world.

What/who inspires you?

I follow a couple of artists on Instagram that inspire me. I first wanted to get into modeling after becoming aware of a model by the name of Kelly Eden and from there, I went down the rabbit hole. I follow @porcelainette and her creativity blows my mind. There's also @kali.ledger and @applelovemakeup. Sometimes I find inspiration in the spiritual books I read or some of the music I listen to. It plays out like a music video in my head a lot of the time. @theresafractale is also another huge inspiration for me; her images are always captivating and representative of the sort of images that I want to create.

Dream location?

I haven't really given thought to a "dream location," but if I had my way and there was nothing standing in my way, I would be down to doing something in the middle of the desert or in the Puzzlewood forest in England, that would be a dream.

Picture
Photographer: Jxpaz Filmz @jxpaz MUA: Brittany Moody @brittbrutal Headdress: Miss G Designs @missgdesigns
What did you want to be as a child?

I went through a series of things that I wanted to be when I was a child. First, it was to be an archaeologist, given my love for the video game Tomb Raider. Then, it evolved into wanting to explore the depths of space as an astronaut. I never really thought of myself as being an artist at this age, although I had started modeling when I was a child. It didn't last for very long as I became more of an introvert with stage fright, but now I absolutely found my calling in being a fantasy model.

How long have you been modeling?

Actively, I would say it's been 2 years now.

What is your focus/genre?

I'm big on the fantasy of it all, with a little bit of macabre. I would do more special effects/body paint if I could because I think that would really be a lot of fun, but it's my aim to stick within the realm of dreams.
Picture
Photographer: N Y A F I R E @nyafire
What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?

I feel very blessed to have been featured in several magazines thus far. It really allows me to see that I've had so much growth since I first started and I think what helped was figuring out who I wanted to be as an artist, not just as a model. I essentially found my niche. Before, I thought to model meant I was supposed to do everything and anything thrown at you, but I wasn't satisfied. And my photos were of high quality as I gained more experience, but I don't feel as confused or lost now as I did before. I'm more certain in my direction and what vision I want to share with the world.

Funniest Situation you’ve ever been in?

I asked a friend of mine if I could use her mermaid fin to be a mermaid for just one day, to check it off my bucket list and let me just tell you, that thing is heavy. And it wasn't even the heaviest that they can get. It's a good leg workout and trying to take majestic photos lifting 20 pounds into the air with your legs essentially strapped together and waves crashing against your backside is a very interesting experience. Not to mention, you do this at the beach with onlookers and everyone is pointing and staring at the mermaid.
Picture
Body Painting : Micheal Rosner HMUA : Yuma Bastet Photographer : Ian Carre-Burritt
What about your style makes you so unique?

I think my style is rather unique just because I find that I am inspired by so many different styles that I don't try to follow one path. I instead take the bits and pieces of what I like from all of them and kind of mash them together to make something new. I think it works best that way because you end up knowing exactly what you like and you own it.
